Summary

At Apple, extraordinary ideas have a way of quickly becoming extraordinary products, services and customer experiences. Sound is an essential and compelling facet of the customer experience. Apple has assembled an elite Acoustics team that enables our customers to experience music with delight, communicate with clarity, and enjoy elegant sound throughout our product line. In Apple Acoustics we work with the utmost attention to detail, directly impacting the design of products that millions of people around the world love! Our Noise & Vibration team contributes to hardware design, validation, and troubleshooting to minimize distracting audible noises and optimize their sound quality. We are a diverse team of acoustics and vibration experts, accomplished listeners, and creative problem solvers. We work daily with multifunctional teams on innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges. We are looking for a Noise & Vibration Engineer to join our team. Could this be you?

Description

As a mechanical Noise & Vibration engineer you will evaluate, objectively and subjectively, noise from fans, keyboards, trackpads, and buttons across all of Apple’s product lines as well as set limits for such noise. You will develop metrics to quantify issues, apply user studies to establish thresholds, and participate in cross-functional teams to find root causes of problems. Along the way you will work with module, system, functional, and manufacturing teams to optimize the sound of Apple products. We do not own any product designs, but we work with the design owners and provide design guidance where possible. You will work closely with other N&V engineers at overseas manufacturing sites, but minimal international travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Critical listener with excellent hearing over the audible frequency range
  • Creative problem solver with attention to details who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Most of our engineers have advanced degrees in Acoustics or an equivalent field, but if you have followed a different path to expertise in Acoustics Engineering, we still want to hear from you!

Preferred Qualifications

  • Acoustic and vibration measurement skills with experience making measurements in anechoic/hemi-anechoic chambers
  • Data analysis skills for transient and quasi-steady signals (e.g. time series, FFT, spectrogram)
  • Knowledge of acoustics and vibration principles and how motion of mechanical systems turns into radiated noise
  • Useful but not required: history with high-volume consumer electronics, experience with low-noise measurements, knowledge of testing for and sources of fan noise in consumer electronics, understanding of noise generation in buttons, switches, and actuators.

Pay & Benefits

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $143,100 and $214,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
