SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION
Consistent with Section 6.109.130 County of Los Angeles Code, persons holding the title of Public Works Maintenance Worker(Item 5923), who are engaged on a permanent full-time basis in sewer maintenance duties, shall be compensated at a rate of two salary schedules higher than otherwise noted.

Essential Job Functions

Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks. These tasks indicated below may be performed in more than one division.

FLOOD CONTROL employs shovels, axes, chain and hand saws, etc. to clear brush, trees, shrubs and other vegetation or obstructions from flood control channels; as a crew member inspects and repairs storm drains adhering to all safety practices and procedures required for working in underground and confined spaces; locates and injects sealing material into cracks, chips out and repairs spoiled areas of concrete and performs any and all operations required to remove and patch eroded areas of channels including replacement of reinforcing steel;

operates diversion structures that control dispersal of water from channels and basins into spreading grounds in accordance with directions from the Water Conservation Division; operates herbicide spraying vehicles or manually operated devices while wearing protective clothing and breathing equipment, exercises care in the loading and dispersal of herbicides to protect self, fellow workers and the public; inspects,

cleans and repairs pumping station sumps, sub-drain vaults, pumping plant outlets and catch basins; performs a variety of tasks required to operate and maintain salt water intrusion barriers such as the removal, inspection, repair and replacement of Ball, Baily, Clay and 4-way valves; uses necessary materials and equipment to install and/or repair facility fencing; and operates and maintains valves and other equipment at the dams.

ROAD MAINTENANCE assists in road construction projects, performing such work as checking the grade, spreading and smoothing base materials, spreading oil and asphalt, rolling and tamping finished surface, and building beams; assists in patch paving, prepares subbase, applies oil, rock, and asphalt,

and tamps or rolls surface; assists in repairing concrete structures, and sidewalks; sets forms; mixes, pours, and finishes concrete; assists in sealing asphalt roads using oil and rock or slurry; performs emergency work during storms, including clearing debris from roads and draining structures and placing sandbags; operates such equipment as skip loaders, emulsion sprayers, asphalt spreading machines, and power brooms; drives automotive equipment to work sites,

which may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or over; may provide lead-assistance in directing a small crew in routine work, such as clearing debris from streets and drainage structures, spraying weeds, and minor patch work; and operate motor grader.

SEWER MAINTENANCE may work on crews specializing in some phase of sewer maintenance operations such as inspecting, cleaning sewer lines with specialized hand or power operated tools and equipment, including sewer cleaning machines, pumps, air compressors, blowers, etc.,

or assisting in the maintenance of treatment plant operation; assists in the containment and removal of sewage overflows; excavates and reconstructs sewers using tractors, backhoe, pneumatic tools, winches and cables, and installs sheeting and shoring; may operate closed circuit television equipment used for internal sewer inspection; drives automotive equipment and other vehicles supporting sewer maintenance operations.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience in the construction, repair, and maintenance of flood control and water conservation structures and facilities -OR- one year of experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of road, streets or bridges -OR- one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of sewer systems, and the satisfactory completion of a specified sewer maintenance on-the-job training program* approved by the County of Los Angeles.

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License is required. A valid California Class A or B Driver License may be required for appointment to some positions in this class.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
License Information: All successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL BE NOT BE APPOINTED.

The County is required to comply with the Federal regulations which require a pre-employment, post accident reasonable suspicion, return to work, follow up, and random urine drug and breath alcohol testing of employees who carry commercial driver licenses and who are assigned to drive certain vehicles.

Additional Information

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based on application information weighted 50% and an Appraisal of Promotability weighted 50%. The Appraisal of Promotability will evaluate such factors as knowledge and skills, personal and public relations, productivity, written and oral communication, adaptability, and dependability.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination in order to be place on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be added to the eligible register and unless appointed, will appear in the order of their score group for a period of 12 months following the date of eligibility.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY 12 MONTHS.

VACANCY INFORMATION
The resulting eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Public Works.
