Overview:

We are looking for an Illustrator to join the GitHub Brand Studio. In this role, you will be responsible for driving concept development and execution on Illustration projects, maintaining a high standard of craft, and using visual storytelling to create strong connections with both internal and external audiences.

You’ll be working as a mid-level individual contributor, creating world-class illustrations while learning from other creatives on the team and contributing to our illustration direction as a whole. You understand that the best work requires more than just drawing skills; you’re willing to jump into concepting and collaborate closely with various team members. Collaboration is key to GitHub’s success, and you will work closely with other designers, project managers, engineers, and HR and internal comms team stakeholders to propose illustration solutions and ensure a successful outcome.

Responsibilities:

Illustrators at GitHub are expert individual contributors; they are given a lot of autonomy and trust to work on our most impactful projects. For this specific role, we’re looking for someone to do the following:

Partner with the Director of Brand Studio to execute on a shared vision for the future of GitHub’s internal and external brand and visual strategy

Collaborate with HR, internal comms, and other cross-functional teams to understand the business need and translate goals into effective illustrations

Produce sketches to present concepts to stakeholders and gather feedback to improve your work.

Identify, advocate for, and own design-driven projects and initiatives that have cross-team impact.

Provide regular, direct, and impactful feedback in design reviews with your teammates to ensure high-quality execution and continuously up-level the team’s design output.

Use, contribute to, and evolve GitHub’s design system and brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all brand touchpoints.

Systems thinking: Our team has to apply decisions holistically, ensuring new patterns fit into the larger system of the brand, design system, and product, while supporting experiences for individual features.

Progress and impact: Our team often works on the meta and so it’s easy to get caught up in the design details. We have to be mindful of this and ensure we keep making decisions and moving forward. This means being solutions-oriented and prioritizing progress over correctness when it’s the right call, but never sacrificing quality.

Candidness: We encourage candidness and recognize its role in building trust between managers and reports and with peers and leadership. It can take time and effort to get there, but it’s worth it. Making decisions for projects, design patterns, and processes will yield better results when we can get to the “real talk”.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

5+ years experience in illustration or graphic design

OR Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, or related field AND 3+ years experience in illustration or graphic design
OR Master’s Degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in illustration or graphic design
OR equivalent experience.

Portfolio showcasing a body of illustration, graphic design, composition and use of color principles, showcasing a product, business or initiative.
Familiarity with modern illustration and design tools and software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma, or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:

7+ years experience in product or service design

OR Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, or related field AND 5+ years experience in illustration or graphic design
OR Master’s Degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, or related field AND 3+ year(s) experience in illustration or graphic design
OR Doctorate in Illustration, Graphic Design, or related field AND 1+ year(s) experience in illustration or graphic design
OR equivalent experience.

2+ years of experience shipping illustrations and/or delivering to customers as a result of an end-to-end design process.
Experience scaling brand resources through effective illustration systems.
Experience with Git and GitHub workflows.

Compensation Range: The base salary range for this job is USD $97,900.00 – USD $259,900.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual’s base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
