Overview:

We’re looking for an experienced leader with proven experience to manage cross-functional design systems/platform teams and guide the evolution of the Primer design system. You’ll be responsible for driving the vision, aligning cross-functional efforts, and ensuring the system grows in step with the needs of GitHub’s platform and users.

This role requires someone who operates with clarity, cuts through complexity, and focuses on getting results. This role has people management responsibilities including driving employee growth and development, executing projects, and managing performance.

Responsibilities:

Systems Thinking: Own the direction of the Primer design system, ensuring decisions are made with a strong platform POV and scaled to meet product demands. Lead with an understanding of where every decision fits into the broader system, and ensure cohesion across the board.
Long-Term Leadership: Lead the long-term vision for the design system. Drive alignment with leadership across design, product, and engineering to make sure our strategy and roadmap deliver for the business.
Inclusive Design: Make inclusivity central to every design decision.
Collaboration for Quality: Work across teams to ensure the final design is implemented with an eye for usability and delight. Collaborate closely with engineering and product teams to ensure that designs meet high standards of execution.

Ownership of Design Integrity: Act as the final approver for design readiness. Consider all perspectives, such as accessibility, brand, and platform experience, when determining if a design is ready to ship.
Setting Quality Expectations: Establish clear guidelines for design principles. Ensure that designs consistently meet expectations across different platforms and interfaces (e.g., desktop, mobile) and work for various user scenarios, including edge cases.
Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead a cross-functional team of direct reports and influence a larger cross-functional program. Ensure collaboration across the org to keep the system evolving with product needs.
Team Enablement: Support your team in doing their best work. You’ll manage hiring, career development, and mentorship to foster growth and a high-performance culture.

Storytelling & Influence: Connect the design system’s story with our product vision. Use clear, direct communication to align executives and inspire action across teams.
Identify opportunities for internal and external programming to highlight the value of the design system and champion our vision for the future.
Business Impact: Collaborate with Design Ops and product to track and report the impact of the design system across the organization. Use data to show how decisions are driving business value and affecting the system’s customer base: designers and developers on feature teams.
Prototyping & Implementation Oversight: Oversee prototyping of high-impact projects, ensuring quality standards are met and guidelines are followed.

Operational Efficiency: Manage resources effectively. Apply enough process to keep things moving quickly, but focus on keeping the team nimble.
Inclusive Practices: Embed inclusive design principles in the system. Lead the team to create accessible designs that work across all platforms and input methods.
Progress-Oriented Leadership: Prioritize progress over perfection. Make decisions and move forward with a focus on impact. Encourage candid conversations to keep the team aligned and focused on delivering results.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

12+ years experience in product or service design

OR Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 10+ years experience in product or service design

OR Master’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years experience in product or service Design
OR Doctorate in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience in product or service Design
OR equivalent experience.

People management experience.
Experience working as part of or leading a Design Systems team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience shipping products and/or delivering to customers as a result of an end-to-end design process.
Experience building a design systems team from scratch.
Technical background or experience working on developer tools.
Experience designing cross-platform experiences including native mobile (iOS and Android).
Experience managing managers.
